Ray Levier

I started playing drums when I was eleven years old. I learned 2 or 3 beats from a friend down the street who had just started drum lessons. No sooner did I even get a grip on playing a simple 2 and 4 groove, I had the unfortunate event of getting severely burned in a terrible camping accident (full story). After this happened to me doctors were saying I was going to die and when I didn't, I felt that I had a second chance on life and if I survived being burned, becoming a professional drummer would be a walk in the park compared to what I endured in the hospital.

My drumming teachers and mentors are Sal LaRocca, Keith Crane, John Riley, Adam Nussbaum, Kim Plainfield, Tommy Campbell, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Robby Ameen, and anybody who ever picked up a stick.

Here are some people that I have had the honor to play with over the years. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their talents and inspiration: Mike Stern~John Abercrombie~Joe Locke~Francois Moutin~Berkana~Dave Binney~Wayne Krantz~KJ Denhert~Dave Mann~ more to come.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
