Richard Garrett

I was born near London, UK in 1957. I started playing guitar and bass at the age of sixteen and have been writing music ever since. I've played jazz, rock, folk and blues; accompanied poets and dijeridu players; sat in a pit orchestra for pantomime; studied singing, Indian Rag and Cosmic Theatre.

I have released four cassette albums and one CD album. The CD, Robot Sculpture, is a powerful fusion of algorithmic composition and fluid improvisation which produces works of great freedom and subtlety. Some of the generative music used to create Robot Sculpture featured as part of “Dark Symphony” a 250,000 Watt computerised sound exhibit at the 2003 Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria.

I now live in an isolated Welsh farmhouse, halfway between the mountains of Snowdonia and the sea, with my partner, Heather Slade. Here, I write music, play guitar at every opportunity and lead weekly jazz workshops near Barmouth, Gwynedd.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
