Richard Luck

'Shanghai' is the brilliant debut from London-born jazz pianist, Richard Luck.

Richard studied at Goldsmiths' College, University of London. During this time he immersed himself in all aspects of piano playing, and whilst performing with the University Big Band, chose the jazz and popular music route. He graduated with a BMus in 2001.

Developing this he soon began a Post Graduate Diploma in Jazz Performance at Trinity College of Music, London under the instruction of Martin Speake, Anita Wardell, Malcolm Creese, Pete Saberton and Nick Weldon. He began performing with many ensembles including Trinity College Big Band and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO). It was at Trinity College he formed what is now his working trio. However, whilst the music was right, Trinity was not - and Richard left early.

Almost immediately he was invited to join the flagship Big Band and Orchestra aboard the world-famous QE2 Ocean Liner. Richard spent the best part of a year touring the world and backing up many world-class acts. He has since returned and 'Shanghai' is the fruit of his labour.

Performing a collection of self-penned melodies and standard material - not limited to the jazz genre - he has brought together the outstanding musical talents of Kevin Jones (bass) and Matt McDonough (drums). Together the trio produce ebullient highs and heart-rending lows - whether burning through a bebop classic or caressing a gentle ballad; that they do this at times within the same musical sentence is a tribute to their craftsmanship.

"... this tightly-performed set is a must have! - ★ ★ ★ ★"

"Shanghai has great energy! Richard Luck incorporates echoes of [Chick] Corea into a genuine British sound. His Palimpsest and the title track are the highlights for me" - George Double

"... a spirit of adventure, and kind of playing skilled, determined and forthright" - Tom Perchard (from the liner notes)
