Billy Mohler: Anatomy

Read "Anatomy" reviewed by John Chacona

Can we please retire the old cliché about jazz from jny: Los Angeles being limp, wan and bland? One listen to pianist Cameron Graves' slamming metal-jazz or to the jittery complexity of David Binney's recent releases should be enough to torch that outdated canard. Now comes bassist Billy Mohler with Anatomy, 43 minutes of amped-up, torqued-out energy that pulses with the elevated heart-rate of first-wave punk rock. That's no accident. Mohler is a pop music pro, a Grammy ...

Edward Simon: 25 Years

Read "25 Years" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Ohad Talmor: Long Forms

Read "Long Forms" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

New York City-based tenor saxophonist, composer, arranger Ohad Talmor and associates provide all the 'jazz' news fit to hear on this superb effort, comprised of thorny time signatures, shifting detours and offbeat mini-grooves, enamored with the leader's whizzing solos and more goodness. Acclaimed due to his arrangements for the late sax great Lee Konitz and affiliations with top-shelf musicians on a global basis, Talmor's multidirectional works often proceed with a semblance of micro-suites, embedded with simmering, odd-metered passages, and fluctuating ...

Edward Simon: 25 Years

Read "25 Years" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Pianist Edward Simon immigrated to the United States from his native Venezuela while still in his teens. He stayed, and carved out a successful career in music. His fiftieth birthday rolled around, and the artist decided it was time to take a look and listen back. In a musical journey that spans the titular 25 Years, Simon has crafted a lot of music, employing a Latin/jazz/classical approach with a seemingly effortless refinement, making sounds that are unfailingly engaging and beautiful. ...

Ohad Talmor Newsreel: Long Forms

Read "Long Forms" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Kneebody: Chapters

Read "Chapters" reviewed by Emmanuel Di Tommaso

Kneebody: Chapters

Read "Chapters" reviewed by Mike Jacobs

Chapters--the title of Kneebody's 2019 release--has a certain appropriateness, as it definitely marks several new ones for the band. One being that lyric-oriented songs account for nearly half of the material on the album. Technically, vocals are nothing new to Kneebody. The band included one track with vocals on their 2002 proto-Kneebody album Wendel. Its 2009 collaborative effort with Theo Bleckmann, Twelve Songs of Charles Ives (Winter and Winter, 2008) was nominated for a Grammy and indeed their recent EP ...

Featuring Shane Endsley (trumpet, compositions), Matt Brewer (bass), Ted Poor (drums), and special guest Gerald Clayton (piano) “What's most remarkable about the quartet's latest, Then the Other, is its uncluttered directness; where many a modern composer props up his music with concepts and themes, Endsley is content to simply write songs, with bold ...

From the Stacks 2011, Vol. 4: The Cookers, Jon Lundbom, Shane Endsley, Others

Source: Something Else!

By S. Victor Aaron This year's fourth installment of From The Stacks is, as has been the pattern, all jazz. But it's jazz in its many incarnations, from straight ahead post-bop to whack jazz. The protagonists here range from experienced old vets to hungry young newcomers. The common element among all six of these new releases is that I recommend them all, for what that's worth. These concise, one-paragraph reviews don't really do these records enough justice in describing the ...
