Simon Lasky

Simon is signed to independent jazz record label ’33 Jazz’. His 6-piece London/U.K based ‘Simon Lasky Group’ perform and record exclusively original compositions by Simon. Released in April 2015,

‘Story Inside’ is the debut album from the new band: The musical palette of flugelhorn, piano, electric and acoustic guitars, electric and fretless bass, prominent percussion (including tabla and congas) and drum kit takes conceptual and idiomatic inspiration from the Pat Metheny Group, saxophonist Andy Sheppard and the famous ECM sound world. The through-composed and extended form compositional style focuses on texture and atmosphere and draws from Simon’s classical training as a composer. The grooves are mostly Latin and pop with poly-rhythmic African influences and with the drum kit as a colour rather than omnipresent. Rich extended jazz harmonies, expressive lyrical melodies, a narrative and sometimes symphonic approach to structure, ‘Story Inside’ takes the listener on a musical and emotional journey.

Lasky’s pieces often have long melody statements and, because the solos are an outgrowth of the arrangements, in some sections it is difficult to know what is composed and what is improvised
