Solar: Suns of Cosmic Consciousness

Read "Suns of Cosmic Consciousness" reviewed by Dennis Hollingsworth

This first effort from the trio known as Solar introduces one of the more intriguing piano-driven groups on the current scene. Pianist Eli Amin, co-founder of the Jazz Drama Program for children in the New York area, received his Master's Degree in Music Education at Lehman College, CUNY and now teaches at the school. Bassist Alan Bernstein, jazz director at the Berkeley-Carroll School in Brooklyn, NY, is a multi-talented composer/arranger with experience in a variety of musical contexts. Drummer and ...

Solar: Suns of Cosmic Consciousness

Read "Suns of Cosmic Consciousness" reviewed by Elliott Simon

Due to our frame of reference, the path of Mercury's solar orbit appears to retrograde. Zoom out and this backward movement disappears as it becomes clear that Mercury's orbit is closer to the sun than Earth's. Frame of reference and perspective are powerful in coloring our conscious thought. As primarily three dimensional organisms, humans have difficulty conceptualizing dimensions such as time as anything other than linear. Dramatic shifts in reference can aid in altering these linear perceptions. Music can effect ...

Solar: Suns of Cosmic Consciousness

Read "Suns of Cosmic Consciousness" reviewed by John Kelman

More than ever before, the younger generation of jazz players emerging are incorporating influences far and wide. While new forms of jazz have always revolved around taking earlier forms and moving them forward, never before have the number of musical choices been so great as to engender an unprecedented eclecticism. Groups like Sweden's E.S.T. incorporate subtle shadings from electronica, even while they are influenced in a big way by European impressionism and the music of Keith Jarrett -- representing a ...

'Solar' Wasn't by Miles Davis

'Solar' Wasn't by Miles Davis

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Who wrote what and when? This question pops up often when jazz fans try to figure out who composed their favorite jazz standards. And like most lamppost shadows that form in the dead of night, nothing is as it seems. For example, Richard Carpenter is credited as the composer of Walkin'. Yet little is known about Carpenter or his involvement in the song. Those familiar with Carpenter know that he was a music publisher whose name magically appears on songs ...

"Solar" (Davis) or "Sonny" (Wayne)?

"Solar" (Davis) or "Sonny" (Wayne)?

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

A long-running discussion (or argument) about the authorship of a major jazz tune may have been resolved once and for all. The tune is “Solar,” copyrighted in 1963 with name of Miles Davis as composer, nearly a decade after he recorded it. It is a 12-bar piece based, with certain departures, on the harmonic structure of “How High The Moon.” Here, from the compilation album Walkin’, is the trumpeter’s 1954 recording with Davey Schildkraudt, alto saxophone; Horace Silver, piano; Percy ...

Charles Mingus Complete 1960 Nat Hentoff Sessions (Solar Records, 2011)

When the great bassist and composer Charles Mingus recorded the albums included in this collection for the Candid label in 1960 he was arguably at the peak of his powers. Beginning with the epochal album Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus that takes up most of disc one, he instructs the band to play a mock live set, recorded in an empty studio with a pianoless quartet featuring Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Ted Curson on trumpet and ...

Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - The Complete Cookbook Sessions (Solar, 2010)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

During the late 1950's and early 1960's tenor saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw" Davis was a very busy man, playing in well regarded groups with Johnny Griffin and this group with the organist Shirley Scott. The organ and tenor format was very popular in the clubs of the northeast US during this time period with fertile scenes in New York, Newark, Philadelphia and other places. This set collects the three “Cookbook" albums Davis and Scott made with Jerome Richardson on flute and ...
