Spike Mason

“Spike Mason is a fantastically good sax player. The respect he has earnt from all corners of the music industry: young and old, jazz pop classical and folk, is testament to his ability to listen, reflect, and respond musically in any situation. The strength of his performance and the sublimity of his improvisations are always evident. Few musicians are so reliably able to find the sweet spot in any venue, the heart in any ensemble, the ear of any audience.” I’ve been playing music all my life, and I love it because it makes me feel alive. I compose and play music every day, and realise it’s what I'll do for the rest of my life. I’ve played music with many musicians over the past 30 years, in Australia, the USA, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Greece, Singapore, Italy, The Czech Republic, Holland, Turkey, and New Zealand. I've performed at countless festivals and clubs, from stadium stages to people's kitchens, with both famous and unknown musicians, in front of very large and very small crowds. I’ve also been a session musician for many diverse artists, helping them make their music a reality, by recording, composing, arranging, and producing on over 150 albums, including soundtracks for film and television. I’ve spent many years studying too and have been awarded a Masters of Music In Jazz Performance, a Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Education, and an Associate Diploma of Jazz Studies. I also enjoy teaching students. I work alongside any instrumentalist or vocalist and teach improvisation, composition, harmony, arranging, and small and large ensemble playing. I love encouraging and equipping students to become confident and capable musicians. I also love giving them the information they are searching for, and helping them to turn their musical dreams into realities. Also, my wife and best friend Lea is a musician - an amazingly intuitive and fearless singer. Her songs are simply gorgeous, and her improvisations are always melodic and free. She has also played music all her life. We perform at gigs together all the time. We also play music at home all the time - in a room next to the kitchen which is full of instruments. We play with our daughters, and our friends, and our extended family, and people who drop in, and their kids... So there is always music in our house.
