States of Play jazz quartet

States of Play is an Australian, Melbourne-based contemporary world-jazz quartet comprising 4 critically acclaimed musicians: Phil Bywater - Saxophone / Flute, Tamara Murphy - Double bass , Elissa Goodrich - Vibraphone, Daniel Farrugia - Drums.

States of Play’s debut CD is an original jazz project inspired by the emotional states & musical forms attributed to traditional Andalusian (Spanish) music encountered in Elissa’s and Clare’s research & work in Spain and in the crafted interplay between the quartet of performing musicians. Though not directly quoting these well-known forms, much of their music plays with the specific emotional states, modes and rhythms attributed to Andalusian music and Flamenco found within music & dance forms, including the Jota Berber, Paso Doble, Alegrias, Bulerias, and Solea.
