Album Description

Rick Margitza's career took off in the late 1980s when he was invited by the great Miles Davis to join his band. Rick then recorded three albums on the Blue Note label under his own name and traveled the world performing his own music and as a member of Grammy-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra. Rick has resided in Paris, France for over a decade and is a graduate of famous jazz program at the Frost School of Music in Miami, FL. Rick contributed two of his own compositions to this project entitled "Widow’s Walk" and "Witches". Pavel Wlosok on Rick: "Rick's lyrical and very personal approach to playing tenor saxophone captured my ears in the early 1990s when I got a chance to purchase his Blue Note album release entitled "This Is New". This happened very early into my freelancing career and the entire album featuring outstanding Joey Calderazzo on the piano as well as Wynton Marsalis' rhythm section of that time opened my ears to a newer harmonic approach. At that time, I was only getting started with Jazz music and never in my life thought that some twenty plus years later I would get an opportunity to perform and record with this fabulous artist. This project is a culmination of one of my dreams coming true and I've contributed five originals to it." Pavel Wlosok Trio has been around since the mid 1990s when he first joined the legendary jazz program at the University of North Texas in Denton and started freelancing in Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. It is there where he met his long-time friend, acoustic bassist Mike McGuirk, who is also a member of Wlosok/McGuirk/Riley trio established in 2006. Pavel on Mike: "Mike's playing approach and musicianship is very much in Scott LaFaro's tradition. Scott was very important member of the Bill Evans Trio, but died very young at the age of twenty-five in a car accident. Many musicians and jazz fans cherish Evans’ recordings with Scott playing bass and for generations now, Scott’s performances remain an inspiration to many upcoming acoustic bassists. Mike understands his role perfectly and his anticipation of my piano ideas and improvisation concepts while performing together has been nothing short of spectacular. When I was figuring out who to get on drums, Mike suggested his long-time friend Andrew Swift who I didn't meet until a day prior to the recording of this album. Andrew turned out to be the medicine doctor had ordered and contributed to this album effortlessly with his tasteful drumming, unique grooves, and wide selection of cymbals which inspired the entire band." While this lyrical album respects the tradition of jazz art at its core, it encourages each listener to implement his/her own imagination by leaving enough space in the music for everyone to become part of the collective experience and for that, this timeless music concept shall shine for decades to come.
