The first eight pieces on "Stretching Time" focus on the art of free improvisation and were all recorded within the past year. Our improvs are usually just a few minutes long and each one establishes a different frame of reference and overall form. I'm playing C flute & bass flute on these, joined by other top local musicians. The final three tracks are previously unreleased recordings of works I wrote and recorded in the late '70s and early '80s and are good examples of my "Third Stream" style (synthesis of jazz & classical genres). I continue to compose in this style, as well as perform with free improv musicians here in St. Louis. My YouTube videos focus exclusively on free improv., so for a broader sampling of my music, I'd recommend visiting my Bandcamp site: fredtompkins.bandcamp.com or my main site: tompkinsjazz.com and click on "listen".
