Album Description

Henri Matisse the master of the use of color said, "Art should be something like a good armchair in which to rest from physical fatigue." Melody Gardot's "Sunset in the Blue -The Deluxe Version" shows its mastery in both the color of the design of its cover and the execution of its musicianship. Matisse got in trouble with some art critics for his simile back in the day. Some listeners might have a similar reaction to Melody's music, but not for me. Gardot's tone is comfortable as sitting in an armchair sipping good champagne or brandy. Maybe Decca issued The Deluxe Version for the brandy drinkers. In the original version she is partially or totally credited for writing 9 of the 13 songs with lush orchestrations. The Deluxe Version adds 5 tracks of acoustic versions without lush orchestrations. Leslie Duncan's "Love Song" in The Deluxe Version counterpoints Melody with {{m: Ibrahim Maalouf = 28483}}. You'll enjoy your adult beverage even more with the sound of his Middle Eastern trumpet and her honey- infused voice. {{m: Philippe Baden Powell = 40734}} adds a Brazilian/European/Bill Evans touch throughout both versions. Some songs qualify as the finest examples of the (to use Charlie Haden's album title) The Art of the Song. I'm talking particularly about the opening track of both versions -"If You Love Me." But it is not the only one just the one that stands out for me. The PhillyGirl who lived out of a family suitcase for a while has become a fixture in Paris and the European jazz scene. Check out the official video of "C'est Magnifique." For shades of its derivation from Aimee, Trintignant and Lelouch... https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=6224PNHoH_w. Around the world critics compare Miss Gardot to Julie London, Sade, Norah Jones, Shirley Horn, Diana Krall, Dinah Washington, Abbey Lincoln and Marlene Dietrich. That being said, all the songs here are pure Melody to me.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
