Loke Risberg

Susanna Risberg is a celebrated and exciting young guitarist and composer from Sweden. Having worked with a wide variety of musicians and artists, in different ways, such as Marit Bergman, Henric de La Cour, Svante Thuresson, Nils Landgren, Miriam Bryant, Blue House Jazz Orchestra among others, received numerous awards and toured all over the world with her own group ”Susanna Risberg Trio” she has already in her 20’s earned her place in the music world. At the age of 10 she got her very first guitar. Inspired by her hero Jimi Hendrix she formed a blues/rock trio, which sooner developed into a quartet. They made great success around Sweden, performing at blues festivals and clubs. Always searching for new and challenging things, Susanna got more and more into jazz music, which due to her being a 15-year old female guitarist, with a great talent for the music led to a lot of attention in the media. In 2005 she was awarded a Scholarship from the Albin Hagström Fund for guitarists. Soon thereafter she was contacted by Fender Musical Instruments and Guild Guitars and offered an endorsement. The following three years she performed as soloist with Blue House Jazz Orchestra, led by Magnus Lindgren, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, and with Mölndal Big Band in a collaboration with Svante Thuresson. She also formed her own trio, which has played at jazz clubs all over Sweden. In 2008 she was accepted to Berklee College of Music on a scholarship. She studied with Mick Goddrick, David Fiuczynski, Hal Crook, Tim Miller among others, and in 2011 she was awarded the prestigious "Jimi Hendrix Award". Since May 2011 she has recorded two albums and toured a great deal with her own group "Susanna Risberg Trio". Ale William Sjöström (bass) and Jonathan Lundberg (drums) are the current members of the trio; which sometimes expand to a quartet, featuring tenor player Malin Wättring. In October 2015 Susanna was awarded the prestigious prize "Jazzkatten", in the category "Newcomer of the Year" from the Swedish Radio, with the motivation "Despite her young age she is already a rising star with an extensive track record and a safe rock in a variety ofcontexts. It started with an electric guitar and an idol named Jimi Hendrix. Today she is predicted to become oneof Sweden's leading guitar players .”

Susanna Risberg: Bold As Love

Listen to Susanna Risberg playing and it doesn't take long to realize that the twenty-eight-year-old Swedish guitarist is a bit special. Despite her relatively young years Risberg has been gigging for fifteen years already, turning more than a few heads along the way with a style that is unflashy yet exciting, technically impressive yet emotionally keen. Respected BBC/Jazzwise journalist Kevin Le Gendre describes Risberg as “a brilliantly expansive soloist" and, in a review of her trio's performance at ...

Susanna Risberg: Vilddjur

Read "Vilddjur" reviewed by Ian Patterson

If the proverbial ten thousand hours of practise does lead to mastery of one's craft, then it's a safe bet that twenty-six-year-old Swedish guitarist Susanna Risberg has long since passed that milestone since taking up the guitar aged ten. Nor is it just her virtuosity that compels on Vilddjur, her third album as leader, but her emotional shading and the compositional sophistication at play too. These nine refined yet visceral tunes also suggest that Risberg's musical vision is broader than ...

“Special kudos go out to the sensational young Swedish guitarist Susanna Risberg, who—as heard here with her trio—worked imaginatively within a clean-toned jazz guitar approach. Most importantly, she captured our attention with her unpredictable, nuanced musicality.” - Josef Woodard, Downbeat Magazine ”Sweden's Susanna Risberg …… stakes a strong claim as a potentially significant new arrival in contemporary jazz …… Many of her pieces have pleasingly askew melodic lines and rhythmic frameworks that shift between the dynamic and static, introducing welcome subtleties into moments when the improvisations reach fever pitch
