Darrifourcq

Born in 1979 in Orthez, he was first trained as a classical music percussionist. At the age of 15, he finally choosed to play drums and made his stage entry in a rock band. He discovered jazz music only later on, when he had a chance to play with Francis Lassus, Abdu Salim, Jacky Bérécochea…

When he met Daniel Humair, he definately choosed to become a professionnal musician: he settled down in Toulouse and won his jazz diploma in the conservatory. In 2003, he created his own combo, «L’Egotiste Sorel» with wich he wrote and produced his first album («Vie de Henry Brulard» -Aljama Records- named after Stendhal’s novel) In 2004 is a new milestone: the creation of the Emile Parisien quartet. Along with Julien Touéry and Ivan Gélugne, they expore unchartered spaces of sounds, arrange various moods in order to make storutellings out of their music. An innovatite music, full of infuriated climaxes, and in which humor and self mockery make the traditionnal jazz patterns go out of the rails. The band released three albums «Au revoir Porc-Epic», «Original Pimpant» and «Chien-Guêoe», were critically acclaimed and received the prestigious «Frank Ténot» price during the «Victoire du jazz» awards. Michel Portal, with whom the quartet gave a special concert, later invited him to joined his band, along with Tony Malaby, Bojan Z and Bruno Chevillon. Along the course of his career, several meetings have grown his interest for more contemporary shapes of expression, and made him frequently play outside the famework of straight jazz. Beyond his esthetic preferences, his work focus on 3 main interleaved center points: the sound, as an abstract and living substance, the gesture as a sound generator, the shape, as an organisation of this living substance. Often adding electronic devices to his drums setup, he plays on regular basis with the most daring figures of the new french avantgarde (Eve Risser, Julien Desprez, Benjamin Dousteyssier, Fanny Lasfargues, Emilie Lesbros…) in atypical combos wich interleaves elements of rock’and’roll, free-jazz, free improvisation, as well as electroacoustic experiments (Q, Karoshi, Nux…). Consequently, he contributes to the work of young contemposers and plays in various places welcoming contemporary forms of creation. In 2008, he settled down in Paris, where he had the opportunity to show his wide palette with such musicians as Marc Ducret, Andrea Parkins, Sylvain Kassap, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Akosh S, Simon H. Fell, Claude Tchamitchian…
