Tai Adelaja Tai Adelaja

Tai “TMon” Adelaja is a percussionist, sound designer and music technologist from Lagos, Nigeria. He freelances as a studio designer, music producer, sound engineer, arts critic and entertainment writer. He is a trained master of the djundjun (an African bass drum), a competent accompanist on djembe, a global music afficionado and an expert on electronic and traditional musical instruments. Tai is a passionate scholar and champion of themes and concepts in global percussionism especially as they relate to “transAfrican” music.

Tai briefly studied African drum and dance with the late great Babatunde Olatunji in 1992 and completed a 3-year cultural residency program with Master Drummer Aidoo Mamadi Holmes' Wo’se African Dance Theater in 2000. As Wo'se's bonafide Operations Associate, he helped facilitate expansion of dance theater operations and integration of traditional Nigerian drum and dance into company repertoire.

In private and professional life, Tai continues to pursue his passion for music, entertainment and the arts as well as a commitment to cultural and environmental causes. He is a committed advocate of the percussive arts and frontman of The Lagos Drum Circle, an itinerant drum and dance gathering that holds in Lagos at least once a year. Tai is also Associate Editor of Simply Jazz Magazine, Nigeria's Premier Jazz Magazine.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
