Personnel

Album Description

One of the most unique aspects of this competition was the structure of the side-personnel that performed with the competitors. Structured as male/female duos, these individuals along with the competitors showed the most diverse grouping of competitors any jazz competition has ever put forth to date. What you will see represented by the music you hear on this album represents what I consider to be my understanding of the Ellis Marsalis legacy. In essence, his legacy is not merely about music or jazz at all. What I learned from E after all of this time is that Jazz music is synonymous with the essence of life. It welcomes all, it provides hope, it sustains the courageous, it experiences despair, it can exude great joy, it can exhibit great comfort, and it can be understood regardless of sex, age, religion, or language. Jazz music represents the hope that we all seek in life for a better tomorrow. These competitors of the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition represent the best indication that said hope is not misplaced.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
