The Tipsy Gypsies

From inspirations of love and love Lost comes one of the most enjoyable groups out of the central coast of California, The Tipsy Gypsies, featuring the lovely Hillary Langdon on vocals, Guitar players Toan Chau and Forrestt Williams, drummer Sean Sullivan, and Double Bassist Matt Reeder. These are the best musicians the area has to offer, but the chemistry the Tipsy Gypsies has during their packed live performances is greater than the sum of its parts. The Tipsy Gypsies play a style of music that is rooted in Gypsy Jazz, like Django Reinhardt, and inspired by Billie Holiday, but updated with modern influences like the vocal stylings of Feist and Portishead. For example, in their live performance they cover material from the Velvet Underground, Portishead and the Beatles, all played in a gypsy jazz style. Their music could be described as a cross between Gypsy Jazz and Pop Music. They have created a style that is both classic and unique all at once. The group began playing together for fun, but soon realized that they had something real to offer the world. They recorded their first demo, ‘Sunday Afternoon’, in the fall of 2008, and found themselves selling out of CDs at every show. They quickly developed a following on the Central Coast of California, San Luis Obispo area, and played to packed houses of mixed crowds. It soon became apparent that their music was appealing to all types of people, young and old, punks and swing dancers, college kids and adults. Everyone seems to enjoy the Tipsy Gypsies. Their new CD is entitled ‘Lipstick Holdup’. It was mixed and mastered by Jason Mariani at Brotheryn studios, who has worked with Kenny Loggins, Supertramp and Jack Johnson. It is availble on their website and available on iTunes in December 2009. They will be touring up and down the west coast, playing a combination of club dates and jazz festivals in the spring of 2010 to support the release of the self-produced CD.

“I first saw The Tipsy Gypsies at one of New Times photog Steve Miller’s studio shindigs and was immediately blown away by their tight musicianship, Django Reinhardt/Gypsy jazz sound, awesome original compositions, and saucy front woman Hillary Langdon, who puts her own spin on Billie Holiday’s vocal prowess.” - Glen Starkey, New Times, San Luis Obispo, CA
