Tom Skublics

om Skublics is a full time, free-lancing woodwind player with over 35 years of experience on saxophones, clarinets, flutes and piccolo.

Since 1998 he has played the lead woodwind chair in the orchestras for The Shaw Festival’s musical productions in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario. This includes many well known shows: “Gypsy”, “My Fair Lady”, “High Society”, and “Ragtime” just to name a few. 2013 will be his 16th consecutive season in which Tom will play piccolo, flute, clarinet and alto sax in “Guys & Dolls”. Tom is also the Shaw’s music copyist and helps prepare the orchestra scores and books for any re-orchestration that is required in their productions. His excellent skills at using the music notation software packages “Finale” and “Sibelius” are well known.

Tom has also played in many Toronto productions mounted by the Mirvish’s, Livent and others. Shows have included “Cats”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Crazy For You”, “Miss Saigon”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Showboat” and many more.

Back in the 1980′s when the Royal York Hotel’s Imperial Room had weekly acts come in for dining and dancing, Tom played in the Howard Cable orchestra and had the opportunity to back people like Peggy Lee, Connie Francis, Mel Torme, and Tony Bennett. His favourite gig of all time was 2 weeks in a big band there backing none other than Ella Fitzgerald!

Tom also did a 5 year stint with children’s entertainers “Sharon, Lois, and Bram” that included many live concerts, touring all over North America, several recordings, videos and television.

Outside of the theatre world, besides leading “The Tom Skublics Band”, Tom plays in a variety of styles with several bands in the Greater Toronto Area.

You’ve probably heard Tom’s woodwinds on a television or radio commercial, and other recordings made by independent artists. He has also recorded many Broadway show soundtracks for the students in the Sheridan College Theatre Programme from which they learn their craft.

In the music industry, Tom is a well respected professional. He is an excellent sight-reader, has a huge “faking” repertoire, and is a superb doubler. His attention to detail, sensitive playing, integrity and reliability are well known in the industry.
