Aneta George

Aneta George is born in Macedonia, in year 1982 (full name Aneta George Kacurkova). Her interest in music is of very young age, where she studied the harmonies of the Beatles songs, and composed her own songs. She was self taught, played tunes on the piano by ear and sang them.

Deeply influenced by Stevie Wonder and Boyz || Men, at age of 15, after getting very comfortable in songwriting, she started a vocal trio named PS - “Peeme Soul”, which in English means “We sing soul”. The trio consisted of three females, all teenagers. Shortly after their first song which was a soul ballad, they became very popular in Macedonia. They released several singles, took part of music festivals, as well as toured within the country. The activity of the trio lasted for five years. In the meantime, Aneta started working as a songwriter, arranger, and back up vocalist for other Macedonian and Albanian artists.

In year 2002, she moved to Greece to study computer science, where she entered a jazz bend as a lead vocal. For the next four years she explored and learned the jazz standards and harmonies, rehearsing intensely with the band, performing in the jazz bars of Thessaloniki.

After moving back to Macedonia, in 2007 she entered the jazz academy in a small town called Stip, with jazz piano as main instrument (the academy did not offer vocal studies). Since she did not have a proper piano training, she practiced the piano day and night for five years, learning and analysing the piano styles of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck and Thelonious Monk. In 2012, Aneta released her first solo project, a soul jazz/soul album with gospel and spiritual lyrics called “UniversaLove”, performing and promoting it in South Africa, Poland, Germany and the Balkans.

The following years are filled with studio work, songwriting for other artists, jazz gigs with her band, playing singing and writing music in several ensembles (classical/jazz duo called “Bas i Glas" with just vocal and double bass, all female Balkan Big Band called “New Sparkrs Jazz Orchestra”, female chamber choir “sv. Zlata Meglenska”).

In October 2015 she appeared as a vocal coach in the first music reality show in Macedonia called “Na ista adresa”. This experience inspired to get deeper into vocal coaching and music education.

Today Aneta lives and works in Paris, also part of the American School of Modern Music, training her vocal with the legendary Michelle Hendricks and Charles Turner.

Maja Alvanović: Wind Rose

Read "Wind Rose" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

The composer and pianist Maja Alvanovic forges her unique sound out of the complex rhythms and the poetry of her native Serbia and Jazz's effervescent spontaneity. She is also a superb bandleader as her Majamisty trio, with fellow Serbians bassist Ervin Malina, and drummer Lav Kovač, performs with vibrant fluidity. The ensemble's fifth release, the charming Wind Rose, maintains the stylistic elements of its predecessors and is equally moving and elegant. Alvanovic's “Passarola" opens with a ...

Majamisty Trio: Wind Rose

Read "Wind Rose" reviewed by Chris May

The Serbian pianist Maja Alvanović and her trio won widespread acclaim in 2020 for Organic (Majamisty), with All About Jazz and The New York Times among early champions of the album. An ineffably beautiful disc, it drove some writers towards the rocks of hyperbole as surely as the Sirens of Greek mythology wrecked besotted seafarers. But overall the praise was justified. And the good news is that Wind Rose, the group's fourth album, rides the same tide, ...

Aneta George & Martin Milcent Trio: Playground

Read "Playground" reviewed by Ljubinko Zivkovic

Vocalists who are relatively new to jazz tend to play it safe and often stick to a tried-and-true set of standards, as close as possible to the interpretations of those standards they are familiar with. You really have to be brave and sure of your compositional and vocal capabilities to come up with a full set of originals which discerning listeners would be satisfied with. On Playground, Aneta George, a relative newcomer to jazz, shows both bravery and the assuredness ...
