Wayne began playing the drums at 8 and for over four decades has performed as a bandleader and sought after sideman at numerous NYC venues such as La Famille in Harlem, Birdland, Smoke Jazz Club, Grant's Tomb, Arthur's Tavern, Wells, Showman's, BB Kings, The Roxy Hotel, Village Gate, The Jazz Forum, NYU, Mezzrow, Churchill Grounds, Zinc Bar, Swing 46, Avery Fisher Hall, Maureen's Jazz Cellar, Smalls and Chelsea Table & Stage.

Wayne has performed with a host of renowned and talented artists such as Fred Mcfarlane, Emme Kemp, Melvin Sparks, George Benson, Jim Cammack, Mike Boone, Marco Panascia, Seleno Clarke, Danny Mixon, John Colianni, Jimmy "Preacher" Robins, Bill Easley, JJ Jackson, Irene Reid, Cynthia Holiday, Annette St. John, Mr. Tony Middleton, The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, The John Peek Orchestra and The Cotton Club Orchestra. 

In 2019 Henderson created The Wayne Henderson Sextet bringing together some of the tri-states' most accomplished and talented independent musicians on piano, bass and brass. The result is an exciting and entertaining mix of jazz genres including swing, straight ahead, classic ballads and big band sounds that's not to be missed!
