Wayne D. Henderson Wayne D. Henderson

This NYC artist began playing the drums at the age of 8. He then moved to the NYC area where he began honing his skills by playing in the The Garden of Prayer Church under the direction of Bishop William James Robinson in Bronx, NY. He became a student of jazz the very first time he heard the great drummer Grady Tate who performed with Jimmy Smith. He was also impressed with the big band swing style of Buddy Rich, Count Basie's Orchestra and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Over the next four decades Henderson has played at Birdland, Smoke Jazz Club, Showmans, BB Kings, The Roxy Hotel, Village Gate, The Jazz Forum, NYU, Churchill Grounds, Zinc Bar, Swing 46 and Avery Fisher Hall.

Henderson has performed with several orchestras: The Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, The John Peek Orchestra and The Cotton Club Orchestra. He has also played with a host of renowned and talented artists such as Fred Mcfarlane, John Colianni, Dave Janeway, Jim Cammack, Emme Kemp, Jed Distler, Melvin Sparks, George Benson, JC Stylles, Teddy Royal, Seleno Clarke, Danny Mixon, Jimmy “Preacher” Robins, Bill Easley, Rocky Middleton, JJ Jackson, Irene Reid, Lizzie Thomas, Pat Tandy, Annette St. John, The Chiffons & Mr. Tony Middleton to name a few.

“Jazz is not just for the jazz purist. If the artist plays with passion, excitement & energy then jazz will appeal to the young & old alike and the genre will continue to attract new fans” .
