Willim S. Brown

William Brown is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Christopher Newport University. He received his graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of North Texas. Professor Brown currently teaches trumpet, improvisation, jazz ensemble, jazz combo, music theory, brass techniques, and music technology. Since his arrival at CNU the department of music now offers jazz ensembles, jazz combos, courses in applied jazz improvisation, jazz arranging and theory, jazz history and the performance major in jazz studies. Mr. Brown has been an active clinician, adjudicator, composer and free lance musician for over twenty-five years. Professor Brown is an artist for Yamaha musical instruments.

The CNU Jazz combos perform a balanced program of jazz standards, arrangements and original compositions. The group has performed throughout the state of Virginia, the Storyville jazz club in New Orleans, Virginia Music Educators Conference, NewYork City, and Europe

The CNU Jazz Ensemble is a high powered big band that performs a variety of jazz styles. The band focuses on intricate arrangements that showcase outstanding jazz soloist within the improvisational sections. The band performs music from the books of many great big bands, including Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Paquito D Riviera, John Clayton, the Dallas Jazz Orchestra, and many others. The band received a superior rating and five students were selected as outstanding soloist at the 2003 North Texas Jazz Festival. The band performed at the 2005 North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Hauge Switzerland. The band has performed with Ann Hampton Calloway, Kurt Elling, Brian Gardner, Bill Evans, Kirby Shaw and many others.
