Mike Frost Project

CHICAGO - After over 20 years as a professional musician in the Chicago area, saxophone player Michael Frost has finally released a debut CD, "Nothing Smooth About It" featuring his jazz group, the Mike Frost Project.

Since the Release Party at the legendary Andy's Jazz Club in downtown Chicago, the group has been steadily gaining acclaim, including airplay and becoming part of the Blujazz roster.

Over the last decade this band has had the privilege of having the steady Sunday Jazz Brunch gig aboard the Odyssey II cruise ship (Navy Pier) as well as being a featured group at many local clubs, venues and private functions. The band is now looking forward to following up the release of the CD with performances across the US and abroad.

On the debut recording, Mike says "I've always wanted to record a CD in the tradition of the old Blue Note recordings, where the band played in one room, LIVE. No overdubbing. The fact that this recording was made in only 2 days is strong testimony to the commitment the band holds to the true art form of jazz. Our goal was to reproduce the experience of our live performances to this recording."

Many of the musicians in the group have had success with other bands playing locally and abroad as well as on previous recordings while Mike has had a successful career playing as well as holding the title of Entertainment Director for Premier Yachts Inc., the company that owns, among other vessels and attractions, the Odyssey II, for 13 years.

A graduate of DePaul University, Mike studied saxophone on scholarship under Bob Black, Hobie Grimes and jazz virtuoso Joe Daly. Mike is also a voting member of The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Mike Frost Project: Comin

Read "Comin" reviewed by Jim Santella

This stellar Chicago organ combo is a swinging sextet from the straight-ahead tradition. Bassist Mark Berls guests on four numbers, giving the Mike Frost Project an even bigger sound. Brothers Mike and Steve Frost have had a lifetime to develop the cohesive sound that they display here. However, it's been a lot more effort than that for the band. They all worked together for over five years to develop the superb cohesiveness that's so prominent on this recommended album.
